Team Online Battle Sofia

Hello everyone!

If you follow me on facebook or twitter then you probably know about the PokerStars VIP Party taking place at the end of this month in Sofia. I'll be there with my Team Pro Online teammates Liliya ‘Liay5’ Novikova and Mikhail ‘innerpsy’ Shalamov. Team Pro's Ivan Demidov is also going to be there. PokerStars definitely knows how to throw a party, so this is gonna be one that you shouldn't miss. If it's close to you, get an invitation through the VIP store and go! I suppose that by now you're familiar with these battles, but in case you don't know what it's all about I'll explain. At some VIP Parties, the Team Onliners engage in a battle. It may consist of various things, like a trivia quiz, slot car racing, magic tricks, blackjack etc. Everyone attending the party will be able to vote on who they think is going to be the winner and there will be prizes to be won at the end of the night.

But you can participate from home too, and win cash prizes! You just have to make a deposit of $10 or more with the bonus code "SOFIA" before 09:55 on May 30 and you'll get a $15k All-in Shootout ticket credited to your account. Stuck.

Hello!

I've been pretty absent from my blog lately... The first reason for that is obvious: wedding preparations! There's a lot more to it than I had ever imagined, but it's been a fun process that I'm enjoying overall so I will definitely not complain about that! :)

The rest of the stuff keeping me busy is poker related, so let's jump into it!

First, as I mentioned around the end of February, André and I moved into an office with other players. March has been the adaptation period to say the least. André and I have basically been debating all month long whether we really wanted to stay at the office or not. After a while it got really tiring, cause we couldn't even synchronize our opinions. On the days where I'd say to André "You know what, I don't think it's worth it, let's go back home", he was more keen on staying. Then the next day, after having thought about his arguments I'd re-open the conversation with "Maybe it's better to stay at the office after all..." only to realize that I had done a very good job at convincing him and now he wanted to leave. I can make you a separate post with more info if you'd like, but for now I think I'll spare you the details. Let me know in the comments if you'd be interested in reading a more detailed discussion on what it's like working at a poker office.

After weighing all the pros and cons, we decided to stay. But that was only towards the end of the month, after spending a lot of mental energies on the subject. Energies that could have been better spent elsewhere... Like poker for example!

Getting used to the new environment definitely took some time. Actually even now, after over a month I still don't feel like I'm operating at 100%. It may look as if I'm doing more or less the same schedule, play the same hours, go to the same dance lessons, etc. but my everyday routine has changed. After I get my morning coffee these days I have to prepare a bag with all my meals for the day to take with me and then prepare my gym bag. Every morning that I leave my house I carry so much stuff with me it looks like I'm going away on a trip. I enjoy working at the office and it definitely has its benefits, but at the same time I kind of feel like a nomad. Does that make sense?

Work-wise things have been rather...tough. That's not a term I use often to describe my poker adventures, but in this case it's rather fitting. Let's be honest, I didn't seriously grind during the first two months of the year. So when I decided to get back to work, saying that I was rusty was an understatement. I was going through my poker notes and it was like someone else had written that stuff, not me. While reading I'd think stuff like "Hmm, that makes total sense!" or "Wow, that's really smart!". Making these remarks when talking with your future self would be okay (if that was ever possible). But when you're feeling that your former self of 3-4 months ago was a better player than what you are right now... You have a problem.

Naturally, I turned to studying. I wanted to study a lot but still play a decent amount of time in order to practice. I started with my regular stakes, but lost a bit of money so decided to move further down until I had confidence that I had regained my skill. At the small/medium stakes things seemed to be rather stable, with my graph going up and down around the same spot. Towards the end of the month  of March I decided to drop the small stakes and go back to playing medium stakes only.

I had spent quite some time studying alone. I also studied a bit with André. I felt like I was playing significantly better than before and yet... My graph kept moving down. And since I was playing higher stakes than before, the downfall got a bit more aggressive. Here's my yearly graph up to this point:

Quite ugly. You can make out the period where I dropped a bit on stakes cause the red line stopped dropping so fast. And then when I moved back up, it got steep again.I got to the point where the whole situation started to really mess with my head. I had a great year at the tables in 2014 but doubt is starting to creep in. What if I'm not a winning player anymore? I'm starting to lose my sleep over this, which only makes things worse cause playing tired doesn't help anyone.

And yet, I don't feel like I'm necessarily playing bad poker. If anything, I think I'm playing okay. I'm probably not at my best performance ever, but these results do feel undeserved. I've been studying and trying to improve but I think the part where I have the biggest problem is my mental game. After all, we know that at the hypers it's possible for winning players to have a span of 10k games where they're losing. The real question here is, (if that's what's happening to you) how do you get out of the 10k span without going crazy?

The only solution Andre and I could think of for this problem was Jared Tendler, the author of "The Mental Game of Poker". Earlier last week I had my first mental coaching session with him and I loved it. It didn't make all my problems disappear of course and Jared does not possess a magic wand that makes your downswings go away (unfortunately), but it did help me on an emotional level. I don't wanna say too much for now cause I've only had one session, it's still early and I have a lot of things to work on, but I will be writing more about my sessions with Jared in future posts.

For the time being, one of the big changes I made was to drop even further down on stakes. So these days you'll find me playing the $3.75s and the $6 hyper turbo satellites. I don't know how long this is going to last (not too long I hope!) but it's a good opportunity if you want to play with me but your bankroll didn't allow you to sit at the mid-stakes tables!

I'll be back with another post soon to let you know of my progress. I think it's important for me to talk about the hard times just like I talk about the good ones. From an outsider's perspective it may look like the life of a poker pro is always easy and it's like printing money, but it's not the case. Plus, I'm sure I'm not the only one that is stuck on the negative side of variance. How many of you are going through a downswing now? What do you do to relax and how do you try to turn it around?

Είδατε τον τίτλο και αναρωτιέστε περί τίνος πρόκειται; Όχι δεν εννοώ κολλημένη με την μπάλα. Ας πάρουμε τα πράγματα με τη σειρά.

Απουσιάζω αρκετά από το μπλογκ μου τον τελευταίο καιρό... Ο πρώτος λόγος γι'αυτό είναι προφανής: προετοιμασίες γάμου! Αυτά που πρέπει να γίνουν είναι περισσότερα απ'όσα φανταζόμουν, αλλά είναι μια ευχάριστη διαδικασία που σε γενικές γραμμές την απολαμβάνω οπότε σίγουρα δεν θα παραπονεθώ γι'αυτό! :)

Τα υπόλοιπα που με κρατάνε απασχολημένη έχουν σχέση με το πόκερ, οπότε πάμε στο ψητό!

Πρώτα απ'όλα, όπως είχα αναφέρει το Φεβρουάριο, ο Αντρέ κι εγώ μετακομίσαμε σε ένα γραφείο με άλλους παίκτες. Το λιγότερο που μπορώ να πω για το Μάρτιο είναι πως ήταν ο μήνας προσαρμογής. Βασικά εγώ κι ο Αντρέ συζητάγαμε καθ'όλη τη διάρκεια του μήνα αν θέλουμε να παραμείνουμε στο γραφείο ή όχι. Μετά από λίγο το όλο σκηνικό έγινε πολύ κουραστικό, γιατί δεν μπορούσαμε καν να συγχρονίσουμε τις απόψεις μας. Τις μέρες που εγώ έλεγα στον Αντρέ "Ξέρεις κάτι, δε νομίζω ότι αξίζει τον κόπο, πάμε πίσω στο σπίτι", εκείνος έτεινε περισσότερο στο να μείνουμε. Την επόμενη μέρα, αφού είχα σκεφτεί τα επιχειρήματά του άνοιγα ξανά την κουβέντα λέγοντας "Ίσως τελικά να είναι καλύτερα να μείνουμε στο γραφείο..." μόνο και μόνο για να συνειδητοποιήσω ότι είχα κάνει πολύ καλή δουλειά στο να τον πείσω και τώρα ήθελε να φύγει. Μπορώ να σας κάνω ένα ξεχωριστό post με περισσότερες πληροφορίες αν θέλετε, αλλά προς το παρόν θα σας γλιτώσω από τις λεπτομέρειες. Πείτε μου στα σχόλια αν θα σας ενδιέφερε να διαβάσετε μια πιο εκτεταμένη άποψη πάνω στο πως είναι να δουλεύεις σε ένα γραφείο πόκερ.

Αφού ζυγίσαμε τα υπέρ και τα κατά, αποφασίσαμε να μείνουμε. Αλλά αυτό έγινε προς το τέλος του μήνα, αφού είχαμε ήδη ξοδέψει μπόλικη φαιά ουσία πάνω στο θέμα. Φαιά ουσία που θα μπορούσε να έχει ξοδευτεί με καλύτερο τρόπο... Στο πόκερ ας πούμε!

Το να εγκλιματιστούμε στο καινούριο περιβάλλον σίγουρα πήρε κάποιο χρόνο. Βασικά ακόμα και τώρα, μετά από πάνω από ένα μήνα ακόμη δεν νιώθω ότι λειτουργώ στο 100%. Μπορεί να φαίνεται ότι κάνω το ίδιο πρόγραμμα, παίζω τις ίδιες ώρες, πηγαίνω στα ίδια μαθήματα χορού, κλπ. αλλά η καθημερινότητά μου έχει αλλάξει. Αυτές τις μέρες, μόλις πιω τον πρωινό μου καφέ πρέπει να ετοιμάσω μια τσάντα με όλα τα γεύματα τις ημέρας έτσι ώστε να μπορώ να τα πάρω μαζί μου. Μετά ετοιμάζω την τσάντα για το γυμναστήριο. Κάθε πρωί φεύγω από το σπίτι μου κουβαλώντας τόση πραμάτεια που είναι λες και πάω ταξίδι. Μου αρέσει να δουλεύω στο γραφείο και έχει σίγουρα τα πλεονεκτήματά του, αλλά ταυτόχρονα νιώθω λίγο σας νομάς. Με νιώθετε;

Όσον αφορά τη δουλειά τα πράγματα μέχρι τώρα είναι... ζόρικα. Δεν είναι ένας όρος που χρησιμοποιώ συχνά όταν μιλάω για τις περιπέτειές μου στο πόκερ, αλλά σ'αυτή την περίπτωση ταιριάζει γάντι. Ας είμαστε ειλικρινείς, δεν δούλεψα σοβαρά τους δύο πρώτους μήνες του χρόνου. Οπότε όταν τελικά αποφάσισα να στρωθώ στη δουλειά, το να πω ότι είχα σκουριάσει θα είναι λίγο. Ξεφύλλιζα τις ποκερικές σημειώσεις μου και ήταν λες και τα είχε γράψει κάποιος άλλος όλα αυτά, όχι εγώ. Ενώ διάβαζα, περνούσαν απ'το μυαλό μου σκέψεις του στυλ "Χμμ, ναι, αυτό βγάζει νόημα!" ή "Ουάου, αυτό είναι πολύ έξυπνο!". Το να κάνεις τέτοιες παρατηρήσεις όταν μιλάς με τον εαυτό σου από το μέλλον είναι οκ (αν ποτέ κάτι τέτοιο ήταν εφικτό). Αλλά όταν νιώθεις ότι ο εαυτός σου πριν από 3-4 μήνες ήταν καλύτερος παίκτης απ'ότι είσαι εσύ τώρα... Τότε έχεις πρόβλημα.

Επόμενο ήταν να στραφώ στο διάβασμα. Ήθελα να διαβάσω πολύ αλλά ταυτόχρονα να παίξω και αρκετά έτσι ώστε να εξασκηθώ. Ξεκίνησα με τα κανονικά μου παιχνίδια, αλλά έχασα λίγα χρήματα οπότε αποφάσισα να μετακινηθώ προς τα κάτω, σε χαμηλότερα buy-ins τουλάχιστον μέχρι να ανακτήσω την αυτοπεποίθησή μου. Στα μικρά/μεσαία επίπεδα τα πράγματα φαίνονταν να είναι σχετικά σταθερά, με το γράφημά μου να ανεβοκατεβαίνει γύρω από το ίδιο σημείο. Γύρω στα τέλη Μαρτίου αποφάσισα να αφήσω τα χαμηλά stakes και να γυρίσω στα μεσαία.

Είχα περάσει αρκετό χρόνο μελετώντας μόνη μου. Πέρασα αρκετό χρόνο διαβάζοντας μαζί με τον Αντρέ. Ένιωθα πως έπαιζα εμφανώς καλύτερα από πριν αλλά και πάλι... Το γράφημά μου συνέχισε την καθοδική του πορεία. Και μιας και έπαιζα πιο ακριβά παιχνίδια από πριν, η κατρακύλα έγινε πιο άγρια. Ορίστε το γράφημά μου μέχρι τώρα:

Άσχημο. Μπορείτε να διακρίνετε την περίοδο που έπαιζα πιο χαμηλά stakes γιατί η κόκκινη γραμμή δεν κατεβαίνει τόσο απότομα. Και μόλις ανέβηκα, έγινε και πάλι απότομη. Έφτασα στο σημείο που το όλο σκηνικό άρχισε να με πειράζει πολύ. Είχα μια πολύ καλή χρονιά στα τραπέζια το 2014 αλλά άρχισαν να με πιάνουν αμφιβολίες. Κι αν δεν καταφέρνω πλέον να κερδίσω; Άρχισα να χάνω τον ύπνο μου με όλη αυτή την ιστορία, κάτι που απλά έκανε τα πράγματα χειρότερα γιατί το να παίζεις κουρασμένος δεν βοηθάει κανένα.

Παρόλα αυτά, δεν νιώθω πως παίζω κακό πόκερ. Το αντίθετο, νιώθω πως παίζω οκ. Δεν είμαι και στην καλύτερη φόρμα που υπήρξα ποτέ, αλλά αυτά τα αποτελέσματα δε νομίζω πως τα αξίζω. Μελετάω και προσπαθώ να βελτιωθώ αλλά νομίζω το σημείο στο οποίο έχω το μεγαλύτερο πρόβλημα είναι το πνευματικό παιχνίδι μου. Άλλωστε ξέρουμε ότι στα hypers είναι πιθανό ένας κερδοφόρος παίκτης να έχει μια περίοδο όπου χάνει μετά από δέκα χιλιάδες τουρνουά. Το ερώτημα που τίθεται εδώ είναι, πως μπορείς να περάσεις αυτή την περίοδο των δέκα χιλιάδων τουρνουά χωρίς να σου στρίψει;

Η μόνη λύση που μπορέσαμε να σκεφτούμε εγώ κι ο Αντρέ σ'αυτό το πρόβλημα ήταν ο Jared Tendler, ο συγγραφέας του "Το Πνευματικό Παιχνίδι του Πόκερ". Την περασμένη εβδομάδα είχα την πρώτη μου συνεδρία μαζί του και ήταν φοβερή. Δεν έκανε τα προβλήματά μου να εξαφανιστούν ως δια μαγείας και φυσικά ο Jared δεν διαθέτει ένα μαγικό ραβδάκι που να διώχνει μακριά τη χασούρα (δυστυχώς), αλλά με βοήθησε σε συναισθηματικό επίπεδο. Δεν θα πω πολλά προς το παρόν γιατί έκανα μόνο μία συνεδρία, είναι νωρίς ακόμα και έχω πολλά πράγματα που πρέπει να βελτιώσω, αλλά θα γράψω περισσότερα για τις συνεδρίες μου με τον Jared σε μελλοντικά posts.

Προς το παρόν, μια από τις μεγάλες αλλαγές που έκανα ήταν να κατέβω σε ακόμα χαμηλότερα τραπέζια. Οπότε αυτές τις μέρες θα με βρείτε να παίζω hyper turbo satellites των $3.75 και $6. Δεν ξέρω πόσο καιρό θα κρατήσει αυτό (ελπίζω όχι πολύ!) αλλά είναι μια καλή ευκαιρία αν θέλετε να παίξετε μαζί μου αλλά το κεφάλαιό σας δεν σας επέτρεπε να καθήσετε σε τραπέζια με μεσαία buy-ins!

Θα επιστρέψω σύντομα με ένα καινούριο post για να σας ενημερώσω για την πρόοδό μου. Νομίζω πως είναι σημαντικό να μιλάω για τις δύσκολες περιόδους όπως μιλάω και για τις καλές. Από την οπτική γωνία κάπου που δεν είναι τόσο μέσα στον κόσμο του πόκερ μπορεί να φαίνεται ότι οι επαγγελματίες παίκτες τα βρίσκουν όλα εύκολα και απλά τυπώνουν χρήματα, αλλά δεν είναι έτσι. Άσε που είμαι σίγουρη ότι δεν είμαι η μόνη που είμαι κολλημένη στην αρνητική πλευρά των διακυμάνσεων. Πόσοι από εσάς περνάτε downswing τώρα; Τι κάνετε για να χαλαρώσετε και πως προσπαθείτε να το γυρίσετε;

Team Pro Online Freerolls Contests

Last month I had a cool idea for my monthly contests that give tickets to the Team Pro Online Freerolls. Each month, I'll have a question on a random fact about one of the Team Online members. All you have to do is guess which Team Pro Online member my question applies to. For example, the question for February's contest was "Which Team Online member is allergic to garlic?". The correct answer was Felix (@xflixx ).

I'm making this post to go a bit more in depth regarding the rules of these contests. Here they are:

1. You need to leave me your PS ID.

Some time ago, I used to consider all answers valid even if they didn't have a PS ID. The problem was that if one of the winners hadn't left me his nickname, then I had to contact them through twitter or facebook, ask them for the ID and then wait until they got back to me. Some people wouldn't see their messages right away (and in some cases it would take days), so I couldn't credit the tickets to their accounts in time for the freeroll. I'd still give them the tickets to play the freeroll of the following month, but the whole process got me stressed and had me chasing after people which is not exactly great. For that reason, all answers that do not have a PS ID will not be eligible to win.

2. Choose a Team Pro Online Member.

I feel like I'm stating the obvious, but there are often replies like "Elky" or "Chris Moneymaker". Those are indeed players sponsored by PokerStars, but they are members of Team Pro and not Team Pro Online. Since this is a freeroll for Team Pro Online, it only makes sense that we limit the possible answers to the Online members. You can find a full list here. Just scroll down to the second half of the page and look for the people whose photo is marked with "Online". You can learn more info about each member by clicking on their photo or their name. Most of the time I'll pick a tricky question that most of the people don't know how to answer, so put your imagination to work and remember... It could literally be ANYONE among the Team Onliners!

3. Make only one guess.

Some people leave me multiple comments with different guesses. They will say for example "The Team Online member who is allergic to garlic is acoimbra (UserID:xxx)" and then a bit later "The Team Online member who is allergic to garlic is Felix (UserIDxxx)". Only one entry is allowed per person, so when that happens I'll consider the first reply as valid and not count the second (or the third, the fourth and so on...).

There were also some people that made two guesses in a single comment, like "I think either you or Andre Coimbra is allergic to garlic". Unfortunately such comments have to be disqualified, cause if I count any correct answers from there it would be unfair to the people who are respecting the rules and making only one guess.

How the winners are chosen

I have 5 tickets to give away each month, so I pick 5 winners among valid entries that guessed correctly. I use random.org for this, so that it's fair and completely random. The winners are announced on twitter and facebook. Don't worry if you didn't win, cause I do these contests every month so there's always a next time!

Τον περασμένο μήνα είχα μια ωραία ιδέα για τους μηνιαίους διαγωνισμούς που δίνουν εισιτήρια Freeroll της Team Pro Online. Κάθε μήνα, θα έχω μια ερώτηση πάνω σε ένα τυχαίο γεγονός που αφορά σε ένα από τα μέλη της ομάδας. Το μόνο που έχετε να κάνετε είναι να μαντέψετε ποιο μέλος της Team Pro Online αφορά η ερώτησή μου. Για παράδειγμα, η ερώτηση για το διαγωνισμό του Φεβρουαρίου ήταν "Ποιο μέλος της Team Online είναι αλλεργικό στο σκόρδο;". Η σωστή απάντηση ήταν ο Felix (@xflixx).

Αυτό το post είναι για να εμβαθύνουμε λίγο στους κανόνες αυτών των διαγωνισμών. Είναι οι εξής:

1. Πρέπει να μου αφήσετε το PokerStars ID σας.

Παλαιότερα θεωρούσα όλες τις απαντήσεις έγκυρες, ακόμη κι αν δεν είχαν το όνομα χρήστη της PokerStars. Το πρόβλημα μ'αυτό ήταν πως αν ένας από τους νικητές δεν μου είχε αφήσει το ψευδώνυμό του, τότε έπρεπε να επικοινωνήσω μαζί του μέσω facebook ή twitter, να του ζητήσω το ID και να περιμένω μέχρι να μου απαντήσουν. Κάποιοι δεν έβλεπαν αμέσως τα μηνύματά τους (ορισμένες φορές μπορεί να έπερνε και μέρες), οπότε δεν μπορούσα να πιστώσω τα εισιτήρια στο λογαριασμό τους πριν από το freeroll. Ακόμα κι έτσι, έδινα τα εισιτήρια για να μπορέσουν να παίξουν το τουρνουά του επόμενου μήνα αλλά η όλη διαδικασία με άγχωνε και με έκανε να κυνηγάω τον κόσμο πράγμα που δεν είναι κι ότι καλύτερο. Γι'αυτό το λόγο, όλες οι απαντήσεις που δεν έχουν PS ID δεν θα είναι υποψήφιες για να νικήσουν.

2. Επιλέξτε ένα μέλος της ομάδας Team Pro Online.

Νομίζω ότι αυτό που λέω είναι προφανές, αλλά συχνά υπάρχουν απαντήσεις του στυλ "Elky" ή "Chris Moneymaker". Αυτοί είναι όντως παίκτες που σπονσοράρονται από την PokerStars, αλλά είναι μέλη της Team Pro και όχι της Team Pro Online. Μιας και αυτό είναι το freeroll της Team Pro Online, το πιο λογικό είναι να περιορίζουμε τις πιθανές απαντήσεις στα μέλη της Team Online. Μπορείτε να βρείτε την ολοκληρωμένη λίστα εδώ. Απλά πηγαίντε στο δεύτερο μισό της σελίδας και ψάξτε για τα άτομα των οποίων η φωτογραφία φέρει τη λέξη "Online". Μπορείτε να μάθετε περισσότερες πληροφορίες για το κάθε μέλος κάνοντας κλικ επάνω στη φωτογραφία ή στο όνομά του. Τις περισσότερες φορές θα διαλέξω κάποια δύσκολη ερώτηση που οι περισσότεροι δεν ξέρουν πως να απαντήσουν, οπότε βάλτε τη φαντασία σας να δουλέψει και μην ξεχνάτε... Πραγματικά μπορεί να είναι ΟΠΟΙΟΣΔΗΠΟΤΕ ανάμεσα στα μέλη της Team Online!

3. Μαντέψτε μία μόνο φορά.

Κάποιοι μου αφήνουν πολλά σχόλια με διαφορετικές μαντεψιές. Θα πουν για παράδειγμα "Το μέλος Team Online που έχει αλλεργία στο σκόρδο είναι ο acoimbra (UserID:xxx)" και μετά λίγο αργότερα "Το μέλος Team Online που έχει αλλεργία στο σκόρδο είναι ο Felix (UserID:xxx)". Επιτρέπεται μόνο μία συμμετοχή ανα άτομο, οπότε όταν συμβαίνει αυτό θα θεωρήσω ως έγκυρη την πρώτη απάντηση και δε θα μετρήσω την δεύτερη (ούτε την τρίτη, ούτε την τέταρτη κλπ.).

Υπήρχαν επίσης άτομα που μάντευαν δύο φορές μέσα στο ίδιο σχόλιο, όπως "Νομίζω ότι ή εσύ ή ο Andre Coimbra είστε αλλεργικοί στο σκόρδο". Δυστυχώς τέτοια σχόλια πρέπει να αποκλείονται γιατί αν μετρήσω ως σωστή κάποια από αυτές τις απαντήσεις τότε δεν είμαι δίκαιη ως προς εκείνους που σεβάστηκαν τους κανονισμούς και μάντεψαν μία μόνο φορά.

Πως επιλέγονται οι νικητές

Κάθε μήνα έχω στη διάθεσή μου 5 εισιτήρια που μπορώ να δώσω, οπότε διαλέγω 5 νικητές ανάμεσα στις έγκυρες απαντήσεις που είναι σωστές. Χρησιμοποιώ το random.org γι'αυτή τη δουλειά, οπότε είναι δίκαιο και εντελώς τυχαίο. Οι νικητές ανακοινώνονται στο twitter και το facebook. Μην ανησυχείτε αν δεν κερδίσατε, γιατί κάνω αυτούς τους διαγωνισμούς κάθε μήνα οπότε υπάρχει πάντα και η επόμενη φορά!

Greek Poker Cup IV Loutraki Trip Report

Hello hello!

I didn't think the time would come where I'd have to write a trip report for visiting my home country, but here it is: My Loutraki trip report!

A couple of weeks ago PokerStars organized the Greek Poker Cup IV at Casino Loutraki. Of course I had to be there so as soon as I heard about it I booked my tickets and made travelling arrangements. Ι was looking forward to this trip for various reasons. First, I never miss an opportunity to go back to Greece. Secondly, it's a series of tournaments organized by PokerStars so it's bound to be good. Thirdly and most importantly I really wanted to see up close what the greek poker community is like. Normally when I travel to poker destinations abroad I'm always looking out for Greek players. If I hear someone speaking in Greek I always go and say hi. So was I excited to participate in a tournament full of Greek people? Hell yeah!

The entrance of Casino Loutraki

I arrived at the Club Hotel Casino Loutraki on Thursday 19th of February, the first day of the Greek Poker Cup series. After a quick check-in, I went up to my room. I was welcomed by a very cozy and modern space and a wonderful sea view.

I was registered at day 1A, so I went to the casino to get my ticket. I arrived there early but there was a massive line which made me lose the entire first level of the tournament. On the positive side that means that there was a really good turnout for the series and I had the opportunity to chat with other players while standing in line.

The main event

The main event was a €550 NLHE tournament that got over 500 participants in total. I arrived at the table having lost some chips already. Not a big deal though, as playing super deep is not really my thing. I said hello at the players and took a seat.

Some years ago there was a tv show in Greece similar to the X-Factor, where people sang and then got grades for their performance from a panel of judges. The grades would go up to 10, with 10 being the holy grail that only a great singer would get. That show got really popular mainly cause of one judge that would praise the participants, give them all sorts of compliments like "I was mesmerized by your voice" only to end up with "Very well, I give you three!!!" and a big smile on his face.

If I could describe the main event in a phrase, it would be "Very well, I give you three!". I literally got all the combinations of 3 imaginable, apart of course from 33 or A3 (those are what we call "too good to be true"). J3o seemed to be a favorite that day. After a while it seemed to be so consistent that I was laughing by myself every time I saw a three in my cards and then folded. It's very possible that other players at my table thought I was crazy. Oh well!

The defining pot of the tourney was when I was holding KJo on a 9-7-T-Q-9 board. My opponent showed pocket sevens and my straight was not enough against his full house. That was a pot of 15k chips (starting stack was 20k) so I got a significant hit there.

I lost a bit later, at the 5th level of the tourney when I raised UTG with AKo. I got two calls, from the player on my left and the Big Blind. The flop came K-T-Q with two cards of the same suit. I bet half the pot and got raised by the UTG+1. The Big Blind folded and I re-raised all-in. The opponent flipped JT. The turn was a 4, but unfortunately the river was a ten that got me eliminated.

The side events

I wasn't exactly thrilled about losing at the main event, but I had the side events as comfort. I played them all, apart from the PLO one. That means I played a €220 NLHE, a 2-day €330 NLHE and a €165 NLHE turbo. I had high hopes for the turbo in particular, but in the end I didn't cash in any of the side events. Then again after the amazing start I had at MTTs this year and considering this isn't my format, I guess I can't complain. Plus, it was super fun to sit at tables full of greek players! I know this may sound mundane to most of you, but the immigrant in me really appreciated the chance to play poker with fellow Greeks! And I know I'm probably not the most appropriate person to say this cause I'm not an MTT expert, but I found the level of poker to be quite good, which made me even more proud of my countrymen!

Okay, I'm more of an online player so I haven't been to many places to play live poker. Yet I can tell you that Casino Loutraki is a very nice space. The room where the poker series was held was super spacious and pleasant. There was free bottled water for all the players and a cafeteria just outside the poker room in case you wanted to grab a coffee or hang out.

The hotel itself is modern, super clean (something I value a lot in hotels) and has a spa. I didn't have time to try out the spa, but I heard it's pretty great (maybe I'll pay it a visit next time around). But with the greek sea right at your feet why would you go to the spa anyway?

The slang

I was having dinner with one of the players I met at the tournament when the subject of greek poker slang came up. I was explaining to John that I find it difficult to translate my blog posts into Greek cause I'm missing a lot of the vocabulary. I've been taught how to play poker by a Portuguese and I mostly talk with people regarding poker in English. So if you think about it, it's normal that I don't know how to say most of that stuff in Greek.

Sure enough, while we were having dinner close to the tournament area one of John's friends came up to us and started explaining how he lost. I kid you not, he was talking in Greek yet I understood less than 10% of what he said. If someone asked me to explain how the guy lost I'd be speechless! Needless to say, John spent the next hour teaching me how to talk poker in Greek. That skill will definitely come in handy!

The community

I must admit I was excited but at the same time a bit skeptical on my way to the Greek Poker Cup. I've never been on a poker-related trip without André before and apart from George Kapalas I hardly knew any of the Greek poker players personally. So here's a heartfelt thank you to all of the people that came and talked to me during the Greek Poker Cup and made me feel welcome. You guys are awesome! From playing poker at the tables to having breakfast in the morning, there was a positive energy all around which definitely contributed in making this trip a great experience for me! I felt like I was meeting old friends and I can't wait until our paths cross again. Thank you!
